"To me, Barcelona was a beautiful mid-aged woman,
she knew how beautiful she was, and knew how to show off her beauty."
“Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect. it means I've decided to see beyond the imperfection.“

Hi, Lily,
How lucky I am to receive your in-depth information.
Actually I am just starting to "face" this special trip and feel a little bit troublesome.
I even thought of canceling the after-meeting trips yesterday.
Your in time information was really encouraging and positive.
Appreciate your help

Hi Dr. Lyu,
Hope your computer can read Spanish.
The French said, that the Europe ended on the Pyrenees.
Because Spain is a combination of European and the Moorish country--
not pure European. But that is the beauty of Spain.
The Moorish occupied Spain for almost 800 years, from 711~1492.
they came from the south, and marched to the north,
and then they lost from the north back to the south.
You can tell the Moorish influence and the Moorish+European style
shown in Spanish life in a gradient scale.
Although you won't see much of the beautiful Moorish palace "Alhambra" in Granada,
but you still would have a taste of Moorish influenced tiles and mosaic in Barcelona.
To me, Barcelona was a beautiful mid-aged woman,
she knew how beautiful she was, and knew how to show off her beauty.
Nowadays, Barcelona has been stained by the vulgar tourists, sigh!
Despite, Barcelona still owns the beautiful sites worth to be visited.
This website has some useful info;"BNC"="Barcelona"
http://w3.bcn.cat/turisme/0,4022,495525130_543993759_3,00.html
Under "What's on BCN"、"Meet BCN"、"Plan your trip" and "Discover BCN"
this is a good website too http://www.barcelonaturisme.com/English/
if you like art, 1 ticket for 7 museum.
In BCN people speak Catalan, not Spanish; most of the people can understand Spanish, but not every one understand English. So you do need a good map with a good plan.
There are 3 tourist information stands located at Plaza Catalunya, the mid-way of Las Ramblas--the main street of down town (or the old part of BCN, a street you would never get tired of, and the street where pickpockets are.), and at the end of Las Ramblas by the port, cross from the Colón statue, where you may get a map of the city+metro, and some more info of interesting places.
How to get around?
For moving from places to places, metro is the best.
Metro station has machines selling tickets for single trip, 10 trips, and
tourist tickets including one-day trip, and 3-day trip...
check here: http://www.tmb.net/en_US/barcelona/moute/targetes/targetes.jsp.
For intensive tourist-visiting, I suggest tour bus
http://www.barcelonabusturistic.cat/web/guest/home
they have one-day pass and two-day pass.
You can get on and off at any time, at any tourist location,
check "routes", and "what to see"
I think they keep every half hour a bus.
What to see?
BCN is a heaven for people love visual arts and architecture.
Picasso Museum is another place I went to visit once a month besides Sitges.
Here shows works Picasso made from 6-year-old to the end of his life.
Not important paintings, but you see how his art transformed, and grew.
You see he practiced a hundred of little paintings just for one big work.
You see he imitated other famous artists' paintings/techniques, when he got bored of his own;
you see he was trying to make a impressionism painting, but half done, because he got that technique even just half done, he didn't have to finish it to prove he could do it. He made sculptures, ceramics, printings...
Foundation of Miró, often has good exhibitions from all over the world. Many more...
The whole BCN is a museum of architecture, is the Mecca for architecture students.
there are all type of edifices from all history,
Architecture: the city wall of Rome, the Barrio Gothic, Renaissance buildings, Baroque, Art Nouveau, Modernism...
But Antoni Gaudí is the GOD to me. You need a good book to learn his genius ideas. Sagrada Familia, Parque Quell, Casa Milá (Casa Pedrera), Casa Batlló...http://www.gaudidesigner.com/uk/index.html
Those public installation art works for 1992-Olympic, everywhere.
Things to do in BCN
Water Fountain (magic Fountain) lighting show along with music, at the front of National Palace, Thur. Fri. Sat. 7pm. Hint: come 1/2 hour earlier and occupy a good spot, camera without flash, watch your wallet!
http://www.barcelona.com/barcelona_directory/attractions_in_barcelona/magic_fountain
Mercado Boqueria, a market with 310 years of history. Go directly to the end or to the left, some small restaurants, offer good local and traditional food.
Sat. and Sun. 10~12am, in the front of Cathedral, traditional music is played and people circle up and dance "Saldana".
Watch a flamingo show.
Have traditional food:Paella (rice cooked in saffron, with some veges, and either sea-food, chicken, vegetarian...), tapas (have an afternoon tea/coffee/beer/cold drinks, and order some small portion of dishes from bar)
Spanish coffee is good, cafe con leche=coffee with milk.
Spanish wine, many brands.
Thing DON'T do:
Don't walk into small streets without people around.
http://news.chinatimes.com/world/0,5246,50404442x132010091601374,00.html
Out of the city:
Sitges pronounce like "siches" in English.
She is a stretched beautiful beach between 2 churches
the old cathedral, and new/white cathedral.
Behind each cathedral,
there are some interesting streets and cemetery to walk around.
Most local people there, are gays--dancers' favorite place.
It is a expensive touristic destination.
Montserrat is a sacred mountain, and a monastery away from the vulgar dust.
http://www.sacred-destinations.com/spain/montserrat-shrine
Girona, a medieval city with wall and moat, and the oldest Jewish quarter.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girona
Figueres, the most visited is Salvador Dali Theater-Museum.
He displayed his works himself. What a genius he was.
http://www.salvador-dali.org/museus/figueres/en_index.html
There are package tours in BCN and in Sitges.
Normally, Sitges and Montserrat is one route on the south of BCN,
and Figueres and Girona is one on the north.
If you would like to take train from BCN to north,
visit Figueres first, and then take train down to Girona,
you could take a night train back to BCN,
or stay a night there to see the illuminated city.
If you are around Gothic Quarter (Barrio Gotico), please remember this address: Calle Ferran 41, this street is in the Gothic Quarter between Las Ramblas and Government center Plaza St. Jaume, the book store "Sant Jordi", my Spanish father Jose and my brother Pepito will be there from Mon.~Sat., but my father doesn't understand English, my brother´s limited English, they might be able to help you. If you walk by, say hi for me, tell them I miss them. Thanks!
Just relax, and enjoy the trip.
Lily
是的,
Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect, it means I've decided to see beyond the imperfection.
To me, Barcelona was a beautiful mid-aged woman,
she knew how beautiful she was, and knew how to show off her beauty.
應該可通用於整個西班牙!
